On March 19, 2012 the Cape Cod National Seashore demolished five barrier beach homes threatened by sea level rise. It was only the latest skirmish in the ongoing battle over the use of this fragile caprice of nature. Beach Wars chronicles the pirates, Indians, rumrunners and farmers who have used this beach to hunt, fish, mooncuss and cut salt marsh hay. Their stories reflect the history of the United States and how we have come to redefine how we want to protect and live with our land and oceans. They also hold valuable lessons for the three million other United States citizens who live less than a meter above sea level and in our two hundred other barrier beach communities.

Good price, prompt delivery. A passionate argument about beach erosion and rising sea level. Worth a read, but a bit one-sides. No, the world isn't going to end in our lifetimes.

Beach Wars 10 000 Years on a Barrier Beach William Sargent 9781475282634 Books Reviews

From Mastodons to master con author William Sargent introduces the reader to the history ( ancient and present ) of Chatham's unique beach environment. As a science writer Sargent includes all the flora and fauna facts, but interestingly he is also a keen observer of human beings and sympathetically delves into today's tense stand off between private and public beach ownership interests. The author has written many books about Pleasant Bay. This one is his best yet.
While the dark and ominous painting that graces the cover of Beach Wars is very relevant to the book, what lies behind it is far more quirky and lighthearted. I found Beach Wars incredibly easy to read and I came away from it feeling like I could hold an educated conversation about the coast with friends, colleagues, or even a Woods Hole scientist. The book is packed with history, research, and Sargent's own personal experiences, but remains as accessible as nearly any fiction novel I have read. While some may find the vast array of stories and characters too erratic for their taste, I found the diversity to be refreshing. Beach Wars is a book you will be comfortable reading for an hour a day or in a single sitting. It is easy to tell that this is a topic that Sargent feels very at home with, and I'm almost hoping for some more coastal controversies to emerge on the Cape so he can get back to work on a sequel.
The book Beach Wars was delivered on time and in good shape. I have only read the first few chapters but it looks like I am going to enjoy it!
Great book. I just finished both the book and a week on the subject coast.

Sargent makes something very complex - less so.

J. Hamilton's review could be my review. Only four stars though. Moby Dick gets five.
Good report on a widespread problem. Led to excellent discussion in our island book club.
